General Cleaning of Plastic Lumber

In most instances, cleaning plastic lumber is a simple process. Dirt and debris can be removed by scrubbing the boards with mild dish detergent and water solution and a soft sponge or soft bristle brush. A toothbrush can be used to clean smaller, difficult-to-reach surfaces.

Rinse the clean lumber with water.

Can I Use a Power Washer to Clean Plastic Lumber?

For deeper cleaning, a power washer can be used to clean plastic lumber. However, a power washer used inappropriately can damage plastic boards. Here’s how to safely clean boards using a power washer.

  1. Always use the lightest setting on the power washer, to begin with.
  2. Never go above 1,500 psi when using a power washer on plastic wood boards.
  3. Keep the tip of the power washer at least 10-12 inches away from the lumber while in use.

There are times when additional cleaning measures need to be taken to remove a difficult substance.

How to Remove Chewing Gum from Plastic Lumber

To remove chewing gum from plastic lumber, first, coat the gum in penetrating oil. Then, use a plastic putty knife to gently pry the gum from the board. For the remaining particles, an acetone solvent can be used with a soft bristle brush for removal. Be sure to rinse with water.

How to Remove Iron Rust from Plastic Boards

If rust has come into contact with plastic boards, saturate the area with a rust remover and scrub with a sponge or soft bristle bush. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Removing Marker, Pen, of Difficult Scuffs From Plastic Timber

A foam eraser sponge can be used to remove markings made by markers, pens, or difficult scuffs from plastic boards. Alternatively, penetrating oil can be used to saturate the area first, before scrubbing the area.

Always test cleaning materials in a small inconspicuous area before cleaning a larger one.
