The team at Plastic Lumber Yard wanted to take a moment to address the most common question that we have gotten over the past few weeks: Why are lead times so long?
Before we answer this question, let us first share that our focus is providing excellent customer service. We believe that excellent communication builds a strong foundation for a great relationship and we are striving to improve in this area so are happy to answer any questions that you may have. Additionally, please know that we are doing everything in our power to ensure that customers receive their orders as quickly as possible.
The Impact Of COVID-19 On The Plastic Industry
The announcement from the World Health Organization (WHO) that COVID-19 was a pandemic was a turning point for the plastic industry. In addition to an increased demand for single use plastics, the medical community required massive amounts of PPE. Manufacturers of virgin plastics had to shift gears to meet this demand.
The recycling industry was actually overwhelmed by the sudden influx of plastics and there has been growing concern among environmental activists regarding the amount of plastics that have been released into the environment.
Unfortunately, the types of plastic that are used in PPE and plastic bags are not the same as those used in milk jugs and detergent bottles, the source of HDPE that Plastic Lumber Yard uses for lumber.
Texas Storms Cause Global Plastic Shortage
In February 2021, Texas experienced a deep freeze that caused millions to lose power, including the chemical plants that produce compounds used in plastic manufacturing. Not only did this halt production but the plants didn’t have enough time to shut down completely, causing many chemical compounds to freeze in pipes and machinery.
Even after the power was turned back on, these chemical plants have had to repair the internal damage done to machinery by the freeze. Many are still currently shut down.
This has caused a serious plastic shortage of virgin plastic across the globe. Now manufacturers are seeking to find a solution by using recycled plastic.
Plastic Lumber Yard: We Are Working Hard To Fill Your Orders Quickly
While Plastic Lumber Yard is thrilled that other companies are choosing to use recycled plastic, this decision has also impacted our supply of recycled plastic. This supply issue will likely continue for the rest of 2021, until new procedures can be put in place.
We will continue to do everything in our power to reduce lead times and we look forward to increasing the amount of recycled plastic used in our products over the next year so that we can continue to have a positive impact on the environment.
