The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that beginning in September 2005, it will impose new requirements for importing manufactured wood articles such as pallets for shipping meat and poultry in order to comply with the “Guidelines for Regulating Wood Packaging Material in International Trade” standard promulgated by the International Plant Protection Convention.
The standard requires that all wood packaging material and pallets to be either heat-treated or fumigated with methyl bromide to prevent infestation and importation of pests that live in wood and pose a threat to U.S. agriculture and food production. The wood and pallets must be marked in a way so that certification the wood was treated or fumigated can be clearly identified.
Similar requirements have already been adopted by the European Union, China, and other exporters and importers. The new USDA requirements take effect on 16 September.
